The Porta Nigra is the old Roman gate at the eastern edge of the Altstadt (old city) in Trier, Germany.
Porta Nigra means “black gate” in Latin and the nearly 2,000-year-old fortification is built form an unusually dark shade of sandstone. The dark color contrasted beautifully with these bright red and yellow tulips in spring bloom back in April.
Trier is the oldest Roman settlement in Germany and right on the banks of the Mosel River. Great place for delicate white wines like Riesling. Also home of the oldest cathedral in Germany. Beautiful little city.
